1. The woman caught in adultery

John 7:53-8:11

The scribes and Pharisees bring a woman caught in adultery and place her before Jesus.

They say Moses commanded such women to be stoned, and they ask Jesus what He says.

John explains that they are testing Him so they can accuse Him.

Jesus bends down and writes on the ground.

When they keep asking, He says:

He who is without sin among you, let him throw the first stone at her.

One by one, they leave, beginning with the older ones.

Jesus asks the woman if anyone has condemned her.

She says no one.

He says they judge according to the flesh, but He does not judge that way.

Darkness represents sin, blindness, lies, and separation from God.

Instead, they seek to kill Jesus, a man who has told them the truth from God.

They then claim God is their Father.

Jesus answers that if God were their Father, they would love Him, because He came from God.

Then Jesus says they are of their father the devil because they want to do the devil’s desires.

He calls the devil a murderer from the beginning and the father of lies.

Meaning

This is one of Jesus’ strongest confrontations.

He is not denying their physical descent from Abraham.

He is saying their actions show a different spiritual reality.

If they truly belonged to God, they would love the Son sent by God.

But because they reject truth and seek murder, they are acting in line with the devil’s character:

lies and death.

Spiritual identity is shown by response to Jesus.

Family background, religious heritage, culture, or labels cannot replace love for Christ and obedience to truth.

6. Jesus existed before Abraham

John 8:48-59

Jesus says that whoever keeps His word will never see death.

The leaders think this proves He has a demon, because Abraham and the prophets died.

They ask if Jesus is greater than Abraham.

Jesus says Abraham rejoiced that he would see His day.

He saw it and was glad.

They respond that Jesus is not even fifty years old, so how could He have seen Abraham?

Jesus answers:

Most certainly, I tell you, before Abraham came into existence, I AM.

Then they pick up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus hides Himself and leaves the temple.

Meaning

Jesus makes a divine claim.

He does not say only:

Before Abraham was, I was.

He says:

I AM.

This language echoes God’s self-revelation and shows why the leaders react so strongly.

Jesus is greater than Abraham because He existed before Abraham.

He is not merely another prophet in Israel’s story.
